Recent reports have demonstrated just how important a web presence is for established businesses. As noted in the previous blog post, the Pew Research Center reports that, “Today, 59% of seniors report they go online—a six-percentage point increase in the course of a year—and 47% say they have a high-speed broadband connection at home.” Clearly then, being able to show up as the first website on a search engine allows you to have a distinct advantage over competitors, regardless of the demographic for your product or service.

This is where SEO comes in. SEO, or search engine optimization, entails the processes utilized by different websites to show up near the top of the rankings on a search engine such as Google or Bing. There are several basic tips that help to boost the SEO activity for a business owner’s website.

The first tip is to constantly be producing new material and content for a website. It’s easy in some ways for a business owner to view a website as a static entity, but a website utilizing SEO requires new content to be effective. As AJ Kumar, co-founder of Single Grain, a digital marketing agency based in San Francisco points out, ” Adding fresh content to your site makes it more appealing both to the search engines and their automated indexing programs, as well as the people who read your pages. High-value content can also lead to viral sharing, which increases the number of external backlinks pointing at your website and further improves your SEO.”

To simply produce content is not enough though. A business owner should focus on conducting the necessary research to find out what key words and topics are trending to ensure maximum efficiency. Kumar notes, ” To determine which keywords are most effective…look at the traffic data for different search queries using Google Analytics or Google’s Webmaster Tools program. ”

Finally, a business owner can and should consider the amount of energy that is being placed on different social media platforms and seeing how it’ll impact his or her SEO. Matt Cutts, a software engineer for Google, recently pointed out that Facebook and Twitter have no impact on SEO. This means that when Google’s algorithms are calculating what websites should show up near the top of their results, Facebook and Twitter mentions will not be considered.

This doesn’t  mean that a business owner that draws traffic from Facebook and Twitter to his or her website should simply ignore these social media platforms; rather, it means that he or she should consider the amount of time it takes to post information on these platforms and calculate the benefits and drawbacks.

More often than not, a business owner may have difficulty managing social media platforms, their website, and pushing for SEO on their own. Hiring staff or investing in the right software programs and research tools may require funds that one may not be able to acquire quickly or easily from a back.
